The Bed & Breakfast

La chiave di volta is located at Via Gelone No. 3 and Via Porta Modica No. 47, in the center of Ibla, a stone's throw from the San Giorgio Gate and the Ibla Gardens. It's in a corner of old Ibla where time still flows lazily with the rhythms and sounds of the Ibla of old, yet very close to Corso XXV Aprile, where you'll find all the shops, restaurants, and pubs that line Ibla's main thoroughfare, the one that connects the splendid Piazza Duomo to the Iblei Gardens and the San Giorgio Gate (San Giorgio Vecchio).

Our B&B, with independent access and spread over two levels, sleeps up to four people in two bedrooms, a living room, a kitchenette, and a comfortable bathroom, all tastefully and simply furnished.

Since 2019, we have made another studio available, with an entrance at Via Porta Modica 47. The furniture and furnishings were mostly made by the owner, who for years has cultivated a passion for wood and the creation of original furnishings, both from raw materials and by reinventing and repurposing various objects.

Other amenities at your disposal: refrigerator, color TV, air conditioning, independent heating (winter).

In the language of architecture, the keystone represents the stone element (usually) that statically architecturally resolves a vault. Our B&B's logo can be admired on the entrance door, where it constitutes the most significant decorative and architectural element of the arch that surmounts it.

The construction of the palace, in its final form, and before the renovations by the current owners, dates back to the first two decades of the last century. It is said that the palace was built by the will of a rich and noble Hyblaean man as an act of love towards his beautiful lover, who was its first guest.

In the second half of the 1930s, after changing owners, it became a Carabinieri barracks. The Palace likely also witnessed, in its own small way, events that shaped post-war Italy.

It appears, and evidence discovered during renovations confirms this, that it was the site of a brief firefight between the Carabinieri and Allied soldiers who, after the landing, were penetrating the Iblean hinterland.

Furthermore, the young people arrested for the "Non si parte" riots of January 6, 1945, were held in the barracks.

..wonders of history and baroque

My dream, now realized, and that of Carmelo (my husband) back in 1989, was to see Ragusa Ibla, which was then a sort of ghost town, become a historic center visited, admired, and experienced like so many other historic centers around the world. Believing it to be no less famous and visited.

Now that this dream is before our eyes, our greatest satisfaction is to share it with all of you. Come and we'll tell you about a dream that has come true thanks in part to our small contribution. In fact, in 1989, together with a friend of ours, we opened one of the very first pubs, "La Chiave di Volta," which helped trigger the virtuous circle that began a true process of rebirth of the old (now ancient) Ibla.

Ragusa Ibla, once an abandoned "suburb" of Ragusa, today constitutes, in law and in fact, the Historic Center of Ragusa.

In Ibla, the voices and cries of children playing still resonate where once only elderly people and run-down houses could be seen. We hope that future generations of Ragusans will continue to be born and raised, proud to live in one of the most beautiful places in the world.
